اعتنق الإسلام بعد نقاش مع جندي مسلم في قاعدة عسكرية في ألمانيا
حضر النقاش( ثلاثون مجندًا وضابطًا). وانتهى النقاش بالإستسلام للإسلام.
سمع جنديًا مسلمًا كان يتحدث دائمًا عن الإسلام وفضائله. وكان مايكل بارنز نصرانيًا متعصبًا للنصرانية ، وكان منزعجًا جدًا من "الجندي المسلم" وما يدعو إليه ، لدرجة أنه قرر يومًا تحديه في نقاش عام حول المسيحية والإسلام ، وحضر المناقشة ثلاثون جنديًا وضابطًا من القاعدة..

إن الجندي المسلم أذهلني ببعض الحقائق، وكان دفاعه قويًا ومقنعًا عن إيمانه، والذي وضع الإسلام في ضوء جديد تمامًا ، وللمرة الأولى ، اهتزت ثقتي في نفسي وفيما أؤمن به.
قرر مايكل بارنز دراسة الإسلام بتعمق، وكان كل يوم بعد العمل يقضي ساعات لا تحصى في قراءة القرآن والكتاب المقدس والمقارنة بينهما، وجعلته الدراسة لمدة عامين يتعرف بعمق على تعاليم الإسلام حتى أستسلم للحق ونطق الشهادتين وأعلن إسلامه، وسمى نفسه "خالد شباز" أو كما بات يُعرف بالعقيد الإمام.

يقول : إن بعض الجنود الأمريكيين من (المسلمين الجدد) الذين اعتنقوا الإسلام حديثًا يأتون إليّ للاستشارة والدعم، وحدث أن "رقيب رئيسي" في القوات الخاصة جاء وهو يبكي ، وقال لي: لقد كنت أفكر في الإسلام منذ حوالي "ثلاث سنوات" وأنا على استعداد إلآن لنطق الشهادة وإعتناق الإسلام.
ظهر العقيد/ خالد شباز "مايكل بارنز" سابقًا في مقابلة وحكى قصة خروجه من النصرانية ودخول الإسلام ، وكيف ترقى في صفوف الجيش الأمريكي بعد الإسلام ، ليصبح صاحب أعلى رتبة لمسلم في تاريخ الجيش الأمريكي ، وهو حاصل على درجتي دكتوراه و 3 ماجستير وله 6 كتب.
